about

Ry Cooder is beyond description. I love the sound of his song by that title, and of the whole album. The guy who sings this Borderline song of mine is trying to persuade his lover to leave where they are, because he thinks they'll otherwise both die. He never really says why, just tells stories about her and her family. But when he says she plays games she "cannot bear to win", you know there's a bigger problem facing them than running away will ever be able to fix.

BORDERLINE LYRICS

Just take my word, we’ve really got to leave
But there is nothing you must promise to believe
All the things we had to say have now been said
If we don’t go you’ll end up wishing you were dead

Way out here beyond the borderline.

Your Grandma often said to me “It is not fun,
But you will know about it when your time has come
It will look almost exactly like today
Except once you go, of course you cannot stay.”

Way out here beyond the borderline
Way out here beyond the borderline
Where the wind don’t blow
And the sun don’t shine
Where the water don’t flow
And love is a crime
Way out here beyond the borderline

If that’s the sunset and you can see
Is it now reflectin’ you reflectin’ me
Well by the time that it decides it has to set
You’d best decide how far away your gonna get

Way out here beyond the borderline.

You had a loving father but he died too young
So then your dear mother was always well unstrung
You can’t remember half the places you have been
And all the games you play you cannot bear to win

Chorus

You say you love me, I think you really do
And that you’ll always understand what we go through
But there are other things I’d rather have you know
T hey are right here even if they never show.

Chorus

Your eyes can shine, your lips are sweet
There are things inside you I rush out to meet
There are some who would not have us try to go
I do not care even if the dangers grow.

Way out here beyond the borderline.
