Somewhere I heard that Bob Dylan had a song line or title that was near as dammit this one. But I may be imagining that whole scene. At any rate, the line was in my head for a long time, until one day a melody intruded while the line was monkey-minding me very annoyingly. With a melody and a line, the nature of the obsessing changes, if you write songs, because you can then call it 'work' and indulge it until you get a song or you wear out the obsession. This song's about obsession in a way that I hope is ambiguous and precise at the same time. I have no idea who the singer is, and no idea who the woman is he's singing to.
