about
My first 18 years were spent in an uneasy relationship with the gospel church to which my whole family was deeply committed. All my songs have some of that gospel feel in them. This one's gospel through and through. There's a line in it my Dad used quite often when he meant: "Okay, there's a lot to think about so leave me alone to think about it." His way of saying that was to look into the middle distance and grumble: "The water's rising everywhere." I never had a clue what he mant, but it sounds right, doesn't it?

SHINE LYRICS
When the light
Begins to shine
When the light
Begins to shine
When the light
Begins to shine
Lord, Lord
It will carry us all away
It will carry us all away
My only brother
Has saved my life
And he made a dear friend
Of my lovin’ wife
His heart is open
His eyes are clear
He brings me right back
To what is right here
Chorus
We had a father
Who had to fight
They said the only choice for you
Is black or white
He’d never listen
He didn’t care
He’d say “The water’s risin’
Almost everywhere”
Chorus
There are occasions
I’ve seen it twice
When you get no choice
But to learn to roll the dice
If concentration
Should slip away
Keep right on breathin’
You know it ain’t gone to stay
Chorus
I heard an old man
Say “If time flies
How come I never see it
Up there in the sky”
I’m told it circles
And then comes back
So ‘now’ and ‘then’ keep peekin’ through
A tiny crack
Chorus
If there are angels
Around us here
We should make dead sure
They never live in fear
If they should like what
They come to see
Imagine how much time they’d save
Eternally
Chorus
